Social Media: What's the big deal?

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube…the list goes on. What was once considered a toy for teenagers has now all but taken over the internet. But why should you use it to market your business?

  • It’s conversational. Communicating with potential customers through social media makes you more accessible. Rather than a big question mark behind an advertising campaign, you become a real person: one who doesn’t simply talk to their customers, but talks with their customers. Not only does this give you the ability to interact with customers on a new level, it also builds trust with them as they develop a relationship with you.
  • It can increase your SEV, or Search Engine Visibility. Search engines like Google and Bing now often include Twitter, YouTube, and blog updates in their search results. Tweeting something as simple as a short customer testimonial, or tagging a Facebook post or YouTube video can draw your target market in from places you never thought possible.
  • It’s easy, and usually free. If you take the time to sit at your computer for small block of time everyday, you have time to implement social media into your marketing strategy. The key is to treat it like exercise: do a little bit every day. This will increase both your presence in the online community and your opportunity to reach out to potential customers.

Here’s the lesson: social media is all about taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. Take some time to sit down and figure out what it is you have to offer that’s just a little bit different and better than your competitors. Once you’ve got that identified, go on and announce it to the world!
